Biography
Local historian and author Kay Atwood, who has written extensively about the Southern Oregon region. Atwood’s books include Illahe: The Story of Settlement in the Rogue River Canyon, Mill Creek Journal: Ashland Oregon, 1850-1860, and Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855. Her many other books and articles explore the settlement and development of communities in Southern Oregon, and include National Register nominations, cultural resource inventories, and environmental and organizational histories.

The primary material in this file is an excerpt from a book entitled Pioneer Catholic History of Oregon by Edwin O'Hara (1939). The excerpt concerns a place in southern Oregon referred to as Allen Gulch. The other materials are index cards detailing information about photos from the Southern Oregon Historical Society's collection.

Correspondence / Family history, 1918-1979
These materials are letters of correspondence between Atwood and several individuals from whom she was seeking information for her Illahe project. The individuals mostly recount their family's histories in these letters and answer Kay's questions about the history of the area. Also included are some photocopies of various documents and other primary source materials.

Hay
The materials are a collection of various documents and notes related to the history of the Hay (or Hayes?) family. Many of these items are handwritten notes, presumably Atwood's, about the family and their history. Also included are newspaper clippings and handwritten manuscripts.
