Biography
Local historian and author Kay Atwood, who has written extensively about the Southern Oregon region. Atwood’s books include Illahe: The Story of Settlement in the Rogue River Canyon, Mill Creek Journal: Ashland Oregon, 1850-1860, and Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855. Her many other books and articles explore the settlement and development of communities in Southern Oregon, and include National Register nominations, cultural resource inventories, and environmental and organizational histories.

The materials describe Acker Rock Lookout. The authors point out the historical significance that would make it eligible when the time is right for the nomination of being placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The authors suggest the lookout's eligibilty be reviewed in ten years.

The excerpt concerns a place in southern Oregon referred to as Allen Gulch. These materials are letters of correspondence between Atwood and several individuals from whom she was seeking information for her Illahe project. The individuals mostly recount their family's histories in these letters and answer Kay's questions about the history of the area. Also included are some photocopies of various documents and other primary source materials.
