Temnanáxt Tuuxanatmíkii

This is a recollection about a little girl when she found her spirit-power. There was war/killing still in this country. Soldiers were still at La Grande. This/Thus she used to tell us. She was named Wapona. They say they killed them at La Grande. They chased the Indians to the Big River, to that place which now is called the Snake River. They killed all of them. They chased them and there, I guess, the Grandmother lost the little girl. She walked around there all alone for I don’t know how long. They say the soldiers found her. They took her to that soldier’s place (fort). They say they wouldn’t eat, that little girl. Bad was the food of the soldiers. Then they took her back to the Snake River and there they released her. And there then she slept by the Snake River. I don’t know how long she slept. And there she came to her Sturgeon(?) and there he spoke/talked to her. He read in her heart whatever she was thinking. She would think, “However will I cross this river?” He told her, “Don’t think like that, follow me.”
