Marjorie Kocher brass rubbings

Marjorie Kocher created the rubbings of large brass funerary monuments in the 1960s. Preservation concerns resulted in a discontinuation of the rubbing practice. Rubbings of memorial monuments are a valued source of information about the evolution of military armor, religious vestments, and other dress and customs in the British Isles in this era. Kocher provided accompanying information that she authored, including her “Annotated Listing of Monumental Brasses of the British Isles” and “Monumental Brasses of the British Isles: An Introduction.”

Sir John D’Aubermon, 1277. A Sheriff of Surrey – the oldest surviving brass in the British Isles. Armor consists of heraldic shield, mail, leather surcoat, sword and spear. Decorative lion at feet. Located at Mary’s Church, Stoke D’Abernon, Surrey. 40”W x 98”L.

Sir Roger De Trumpington, 1289. Fought with Prince Edward in the Seventh Crusade – the second oldest brass recorded. Located at Church of St. Mary and Michael, Trumpington, Cambridge. 32”W x 92”L

Sir Robert De Bures, 1302. Acknowledged as one of the finest Military brasses in the country. Located at All Saints Church, Acton, Suffolk. 40”W x 83”L

Sir Robert De Septvans, 1306. A crusader in the reign of Edward the First. Heraldic shield. Head not covered. Located at St. Mary’s Church, Chartham, Kent. 41”W x 68”L

Margaret de Camois, 1310. Oldest brass memorial to a lady. Wearing kirtle, veil, gown and wimple. Located at Trotton, Suffolk. 41”W x 68”L
