The materials relate to the earthquake originating in Anchorage, Alaska that caused the tsunami in Crescent City and stories about the damage. Powers has designated and ordered the reports by type. These types include banking, oddities, transportation, and newspaper.

The newspaper articles from 1964, include Mr. Powers' handwritten notes about the tsunami in Crescent City. Articles and notes include the destruction of the infrastructure, the stories of the victims of the tsunami, the shipwrecks caused by the high waves, and California earthquakes. Strewn about also are articles that seemingly do not relate to tsunamis.

The Sutter coast hospital printed materials include pamphlets, booklets, and other publications regarding hospital programs and services, and a copy of the hospital's 1999 annual report to the community.

The materials relate to the book on the 1964 Crescent City tsunami written by Powers, entitled "The Raging Sea." The various materials include photocopies of chapters from the book, multiple copies of the leaflet advertising the release of the book, handwritten notes, and miscellaneous correspondence. Additional items include maps of Crescent Harbor, newspaper articles, photographs of the Richard H. Hagemeyer Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
