Biography

Local historian and author Kay Atwood, who has written extensively about the Southern Oregon region. Atwood’s books include Illahe: The Story of Settlement in the Rogue River Canyon, Mill Creek Journal: Ashland Oregon, 1850-1860, and Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855. Her many other books and articles explore the settlement and development of communities in Southern Oregon, and include National Register nominations, cultural resource inventories, and environmental and organizational histories.

Scope and Contents The determination of eligibility form describes the Big Bend Guard Station as historically significant during 1933 - 1941. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) enrollees built the structures. Three structures built during the Depression Era qualify as Historic Places. The National Registry of Historic Places describes Callahan Ranger Station, located in Klamath National Forest. The documents describe the station's rich history and development between 1907 and 1942. Included, are detailed accounts and descriptions of each building, as well as images of the buildings. The research concerns the Callahan Work Center and provides an analysis of the history of the buildings and surrounding area. Materials include a study titled "Callahan Station," compiled by Mary Ann Potter, and an interview between George Hendricks, Fire Control Officer, and Lee Morford, Retired Fire Control Staff Officer on September 30, 1977.
