Biography

Local historian and author Kay Atwood, who has written extensively about the Southern Oregon region. Atwood’s books include Illahe: The Story of Settlement in the Rogue River Canyon, Mill Creek Journal: Ashland Oregon, 1850-1860, and Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855. Her many other books and articles explore the settlement and development of communities in Southern Oregon, and include National Register nominations, cultural resource inventories, and environmental and organizational histories.

Scope and Contents The National Register of Historic Places nomination form describes the Mathias Welch House as a private residence built in 1888 by the local brick-mason George Priddy. The Welch house is the only brick dwellings built in the original town boundary. Mr. Welch was a predominant member of the community, politician, and a businessman. The National Registry of Historic Places nomination form describes the Driver House, built as a private residence for Edward Raymond and wife Mabel Gipson Driver, in the area that was known as Millionaire Row in Central Point.
