Biography

Local historian and author Kay Atwood, who has written extensively about the Southern Oregon region. Atwood’s books include Illahe: The Story of Settlement in the Rogue River Canyon, Mill Creek Journal: Ashland Oregon, 1850-1860, and Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855. Her many other books and articles explore the settlement and development of communities in Southern Oregon, and include National Register nominations, cultural resource inventories, and environmental and organizational histories.

Scope and Contents

The National Registry of Historic Places form describes the Jackson County Courthouse as built in 1932, and designed by architect John G. Link. Medford became the county seat in Southern Oregon in 1927 and Jacksonville's courthouse was overcrowded, and this was a much-needed solution.

Research documents included are the history of the architect, newspaper images, correspondence regarding the nomination, images of the courthouse, and handwritten notes.

The Medford Clinic opened its doors in 1948. Robert Sleeter, Reinhold Kanzler, and Oscar Heyerman formed a team of physicians offering their expertise in the medical field for the people of Medford and the surrounding area. The history of the Medford Clinic provides a timeline and changes for the organization. Scope and Contents The National Register of Historic Places form describes the Medford I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Established in 1890, the cemetery's grave markers represent early 19th-century mortuary art. The set of maps from the Sanborn-Perris Map Company outline the city of Medford, Oregon. The pages can be placed together to get a better idea of the Medford area. The Sanborn Insurance maps are what they used for calculating insurance premiums for customers. Included are maps from the years 1888, 1890, and 1893. These maps provide information about the location, function, building materials, and dimensions of structures for each year listed.

Scope and Contents There are letters and other materials concerning the nomination of the Hamilton and Edith Patton House into the National Register of Historic Places. Louis B.
