Biography
Local historian and author Kay Atwood, who has written extensively about the Southern Oregon region. Atwood’s books include Illahe: The Story of Settlement in the Rogue River Canyon, Mill Creek Journal: Ashland Oregon, 1850-1860, and Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855. Her many other books and articles explore the settlement and development of communities in Southern Oregon, and include National Register nominations, cultural resource inventories, and environmental and organizational histories.

These materials are related to the history of orchards in southern Oregon. Included are several newspaper clippings and letters of correspondence, some of which deal with the deaths of individuals, presumably from the orchard community.

The National Registry of Historic Places describes Southern Oregon Sales as a fruit processing plant that helped revitalize the Rogue River Valley fruit industry during the late 1920s. Details of many different periods of history are in the nomination form, as well as how the fruit industry survived obstacles. Also included are photographs, negatives, and floor plans of the buildings.
