Biography

Local historian and author Kay Atwood, who has written extensively about the Southern Oregon region. Atwood’s books include Illahe: The Story of Settlement in the Rogue River Canyon, Mill Creek Journal: Ashland Oregon, 1850-1860, and Chaining Oregon: Surveying the Public Lands of the Pacific Northwest, 1851-1855. Her many other books and articles explore the settlement and development of communities in Southern Oregon, and include National Register nominations, cultural resource inventories, and environmental and organizational histories.

This folder contains a description of the Bartlett Hotel, which Frank C. Clark designed in Jerome, Arizona, and Ezra C. Bartlett constructed it in 1899, with the grand opening in 1900. It is one of a few buildings that he designed there about the same time. Also included are handwritten notes and images of the town and the hotel.

Kay Atwood and Gail Evans created the "Frank Chamberlain Clark Survey" in 1982. The Jackson County Board of Commissioners sponsored the survey. The survey contains detailed information about the designs by Frank Clark, his biography, and forms documenting each building. The study consists of 232 pages and 12 pages of city maps.
