Crater Lake
Scope and Contents
A volcano within a volcano, Wizards Island is a frequently photographed featured of Crater Lake in Oregon's only national park. Crater Lake was formed eons age when the peak of 12,000-foot Mt. Mazama collapsed during a volcanic eruption. Viewed here from Rim Village on the southwestern side of the lake, Wizard Island is an inactive volcanic cone in the 20-square-mile, cliff-rimmed crater which contains the deepest lake in the United States. Crater Lake National Park is on the crest of the Cascade mountains in southern Oregon, 77 miles east of Medford and 57 miles north of Klamath Falls. (Oregon State Highway Department Photo 8499).
