Crater Lake

 Item — Box: 33, Object: 122
Identifier: Archives081:08.40

Scope and Contents

Crater Lake was formed ages ago when Mt. Mazama literally blew its top and collapsed into its own crater some six miles across. Later volcanic action formed Wizard Island (center), which has its own small crater. Eventually, volcanic action ceased and the crater filled to its present level where evaporation and seepage balance with annual rainfall. Because of the pureness of the water and the altitude, 6,200 feet, the lake has an exceptionally deep blue color. Hillman Peak (left) is the highest point on the rim. Crater Lake National Park is open the year round. (Oregon State Highway Department Photo 7230).
