Family letters, 1918
Scope and Contents
The 1918 collection consists of family letters and memorabilia. Much of the correspondence refers to the death of Walter B. Phillips, Senior. A letter from Chester T (Tolman) of Portage Bay, Alaska, to his Grandmother sends his regrets upon the death of her husband (given the time frame, the departed is likely the elder Walter B. Phillips). There is a letter to F.M. Carter of Ashland, Oregon, from Konrad Schmid of Lowell, Arizona, regarding the property of Walter B. Phillips in his possession. Artifacts sent by Schmidt related to Walter B. Phillips's passing include a Stationary Engineers License certificate from the State of Montana; a bill of sale from a Rochester, Minnesota doctor's office; a membership certificate for the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen; and a faded copper daguerreotype plate wrapped in newspaper. Letters include an introduction to Mrs. L.A. Phillips of Ashland from Mrs. J.P. Towns of Nixon, Texas, the mother of Lillian Phillips (nee Towns), the new wife of Lt. Walter B. Phillips, Junior. A letter from the Military Bureau of the University of California to F.M. Carter of Ashland, Oregon, provides information on the Students' Army Training Corps.
