Scope and Contents

The collection includes exhibit proposals, posters, announcements, and biographical material. There are also magazine and newspaper articles about LaDuke, and others using her art as an illustration. In addition, there is a selection of printers’ sheets of book covers.

In conjunction with this collection, LaDuke donated a substantial number of artworks. “Children of the World,” first displayed in Portland and Medford in 2002 and later at venues in Colorado and the Midwest is now permanently exhibited at Hannon Library. The collection consists of 106 photos, seven paintings, and nine drawings.

Biographical / Historical

Ashland artist Betty LaDuke, whose extensive travels and experiences with cultural diversity form the basis of her art. LaDuke was an art professor at Southern Oregon University for 32 years, from 1964 to 1996. Throughout her career, her annual travels and research focused on women, art, and social change in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

She began exhibiting her work professionally in 1954, and has since had more than 250 solo exhibitions of her paintings, drawings, etching, and photographs on cultural themes, including “Children of the World,” “Surviving War,” “Dreaming Home,” “Honor the Earth,” “Latin American Transitions, 1953-2001” and a retrospective, “Betty LaDuke: Art Reflecting Life 1948-2006.”

Her published books include “Companeras: Women, Art and Social Change in Latin America” (1985), “Africa Through the Eyes of Women Artists” (1990), Women’s Art, Women’s Lives” (1997) and “Women Against Hunger, a Sketchbook Journey” (1997). Videos about her life and work include “Africa Between Myth and Reality” and “Betty LaDuke: An Artist’s Journey from the Bronx to Timbuktu.”
