Content Description

The collection consists of letters, newspaper clippings, and documents relating to Walter Phillips' time in the military during WWI. The photographs feature Walter Phillips before and during WWI. They include pictures of Walter in uniform, reconnaissance photographs, and photos of military life. Scrapbooks of Walter's school years and Lena Phillips' trip to France are part of the collection. Additional correspondence consists of telegrams and postcards to and from Lena Phillips regarding the Gold Star Mothers' trip to France in 1932. The U.S. sponsored a Gold Star Mothers' trip overseas to visit military cemeteries where American soldiers were buried.
