Frame Framed

This collection includes rubbings (wax engravings) of monuments which date from the 13th to 17th centuries. Scholars of Medieval Studies and Shakespeare and his times will find the rubbings useful. The collection contains eighty medieval monumental brass rubbings of the British Isles.

Sir John Bernard and wife, 1451. Located at Isleham, Cambridge. 34”W x 24”L

Richard Quatremayns, 1478. Ornate plate armor, Italian influence. Shows how unwieldly armor is becoming. Sword now hung from waist, pointed sabbatons (broad-toed shoes). Located at Thame, Oxfordshire. 42”W x 21”L

Sir Anthony Grey, 1480. Son and heir of Edmund, First Earl of Kent. Plate armor. Located at St. Albans, Hertfordshire. 45.5”W x 19.5”L

Ralph Hamsterly, Rector, 1518. Shrouded figure in decay, a reminder of immortality and to encourage good behavior. Located at Oddington, Oxfordshire. 35”W x 13”L

Acton Knight, 1528. Brown and white. Located at Acton, Suffolk. 41.5”W x 15.5”L

Unknown Lady, 1535. Heraldic dress. Located at St. Helen’s, Bishops gate, London. 37.5”W x 15.5”L
