Scope and Contents
The National Register of Historic Places describes the "Fairview Historic District" once established as a 19th century solution for the developmentally disabled. As a living institutional farm, located on 670 acres outside of Salem, the residents learned to work the land and lived in "cottages" with their caregivers while living on the farm. In the 20th-century Fairview become a training facility. A total of 26 buildings make up the Fairview historic district. In 2000, the State of Oregon closed the last program at Fairview. Included, are images and descriptions of the buildings, as well as handwritten notes and correspondence.
