Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 11 separately mounted historical photographs, ten taken in the early 1900s, and one in the 1930s or 1940s. Cory Van Dyke’s 12 photos are mounted on five boards; another board features three taken at S.O.S. in 1949, and three taken in 1987 at Pinnacle Orchards. Reid’s poems inspired by the seasonal work accompany the photographs.

Abstract

Susan Reid of Ashland compiled historical and contemporary photographs and poetry in connection with her 1988 master’s thesis, “Pear Packing: A Season of Women’s Work,” which examines the historical role of women in the Rogue Valley pear industry and the importance of women’s work in the regional economy.
