Report to the Chief Forester on Timber Values of Lands Proposed for Withdrawal from Crater National Forest, 1914
Scope and Contents
H-3 "Report to Chief Forester on Timber Values of Lands Proposed for Withdrawal from Crater National Forest," by E. A. Sherman, U.S. Forest Service, San Francisco, California (23p). A personal account of the Land Examiner's visit to the Butte Falls area to inspect the proposed "agricultural" withdrawals in Township 34/Ranges 2 and 3 East, and Township 35/Ranges 3 and 4 East. Interesting and useful information concerning the Forest Service, and perceived attitudes and character of the "timber claim" homesteaders. Recommends a letter of commendation for E. W. Smith, FS employee in the Butte Falls area, a..."young man who had the moral courage to write the President, telling the truth about this land..." (i.e., that it was mostly non-agricultural, commercial forest land). [RR-SNF/SOU-HL]
