The small collection of letters concern the history of Southern Oregon. The topics include the Woolen Mills, the Butte Creek Mill, and 'Gin Lin' of Jacksonville, Oregon. Two significant letters include a personal narrative by a member of the Takelma Indians of the Rogue Valley, and research documenting minorities in early Jacksonville, Oregon.

Scope and Contents The National Register of Historic Places form indicates that the United States Army occupied Fort Lane Site from 1853-1856. Located approximately 3.5 miles northwest of Central Point, Oregon, the fort sat on a small 10-acre portion of a military reserve.
