Family letters, 1917
Scope and Contents
Family correspondence comprises the 1917 collection. The primary addressees include Mr. and Mrs. F. Mortimer "Nick" Carter (nee Veta Elisabeth "Vetabelle" Phillips) and Mrs. L.A. Phillips (nee Lena Anderson) of Ashland, Oregon. The correspondence delves into financial matters but bulks with personal family affairs. Of interest is correspondence regarding the family's involvement in World War I. The correspondence includes a letter from Alvah Henderson of the USS San Diego to Mrs. Carter in response to an inquiry about the recruitment of her sons. Henderson informed Mrs. Carter that while her sons were at that time too young to enlist, a term of service in the Navy after their 17th birthday offered outstanding opportunities. Another reference to the family's military service is a telegram to Mrs. L.A. Phillips from "Watt" in San Antonio, Texas. "Watt" is likely Lt. Walter B. Anderson, Junior, sending word to his mother upon his entry into military service. The telegram refers to his location as a "good camp" with "good officers..men..horses..material..a good swimming hole and plenty of work." The correspondence includes an exchange between Lillian Phillips (nee Lillian Townes Lawrence) and Mrs. L.A. Phillips. Lillian apologized to her new mother-in-law for not including her in her recent nuptials with Lt. Anderson just before his departure to France. In response, Mrs. L.A. Phillips welcomed her to the family. Collection includes a postcard of the "Pension Building" in Washington, D.C.
