Family letters, 1919
Scope and Contents
The 1919 correspondence consists of family letters and clippings. The collection bulks with letters addressed to Mrs. F.M. Vetabelle Elizabeth Carter (nee Phillips) of Ashland, Oregon. Most of the letters dwell on day-to-day family news. The correspondence includes a series of personal letters between Mrs. Carter and her husband, Frederick Mortimer Carter, as he traveled for business. The letters are cordial. Mr. Carter addresses Mrs. Carter as "Dearest Lil' Bunny and signs "Brownie" to close letters to his wife. Much of the correspondence relates to 1 LT Walter B. Phillips, Junior. 1LT Phillips served among the first generation of aerial field artillery gunner/observers. Upon completion of training in 1917, 1LT Phillips married M. Lillian Townes Lawrence of Nixon, Texas. On October 1, 1918, he was killed in action while on an aerial field artillery observation mission.
