 File — Box: 02, Folder: 07
Identifier: MSS049:01.34

Scope and Contents

The 1922 correspondence consists of business correspondence, advertising, family letters, and financial records. Frederick M. Carter is the primary recipient of business correspondence. As in previous collections, friendly correspondents address F.M. Carter as "Ted" or "Nick." The collection includes multiple mail advertisements for various consumer products and services. Vetabelle Elisabeth Phillips Carter of San Francisco and Litchfield, Lassen County, California, received most family letters. Authors of letters to Mrs. Carter include Aunt Selma of Seattle, Washington (most frequent); Betty from San Francisco; Gladys Footman Hartwell of Lodi, California; and Dorothy of Ginn and Company Publishers to "Mother." The collection includes a recipe for homemade beer of unknown authorship. A single letter is addressed to Chester Phillips of Litchfield, Lassen County, California. The collection also includes a type-written detailed description of Lassen National Park in the aftermath of recent volcanic eruptions. Another letter, addressed to "Dearest" and nicknamed "Brownie" in the text, refers to the installation of traffic signals in Ashland as "your signals."
