Scope and Contents

In part 1, Dennis Gray describes the history and prehistory of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) detailing the land, people, vegetation, and waterways of the Rogue River Forest area, describing the Native American Indians and the River, with evidence found through archaeological methods, theories, and issues. The ethnographic period which tells about the Indian way of life, when contact was made Euro-American settlers around the 1850s, and how the Takelma people lived. History of Native Americans from about 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, how they would live in permanent villages during the winter and moved around during other times of the year.

In part II, Kay Atwood describes the history of the Rogue River and the Euro-Americans who would come for the wealth that the area would provide for several different enterprises. She describes the history of the Rogue River Valley from the early 1820s through 1995. Beginning with the fur traders in 1827, Indian wars for land, the discovery of gold in 1848 and 1851, The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850, the railroad, pioneers, and settlers beginning in the 1850s coming to the area. What they endured and how they prospered.
